From the Editor (by Val Luck)
Welcome to the Advent and Christmas edition of Cross Keys. Now the so-called summer is now over (if indeed it ever started!) we can get down to thinking about the Church’s New Year, which is about to begin on Advent Sunday - which this year falls on Sunday 30th November, which is also St Andrew’s Day.
We are having all the usual events this year, starting with our regular Quiet Afternoon at the House of Prayer in Seymour Road on Advent Sunday. I really do recommend this time out with God to everyone, especially if you are already feeling the pressure to get Christmas arrangements under way. Don’t be scared by the name: it’s not a heavy sort of thing, with everyone sitting round meditating in profound silence! We do try to keep quiet, but there’s nothing too intense about it (unless, of course, that’s what you want.) It’s only three hours, and we can, after an introduction and thoughts to guide us from Fr. Peter, do pretty much what we want - read, think, pray, meditate, write an article for Cross Keys - whatever we find helpful in our spiritual journey up to the important festival of Christmas. O.K., it may not strike you as your “thing”, but if you’ve never been, why not t it anyway? You might surprise yourself. Just think: three whole hours with no telephone, clamouring kids, or the dog demanding to be taken out in the rain! Bliss!
I would also draw your attention to the concert by the Treble Clef Choir on 8th November, which should be very enjoyable. Everyone is welcome, so tell your friends. We also have the annual Christmas Fair to look forward to on Saturday 6th December, when you can meet friends and stock up on those last-minute presents and cards. All proceeds from both these events will go to church funds.
Finally, I would like to remind you of all the special services and carols to be held over the Christmas period. You will find these listed separately on p. 14 of this magazine. Happy Christmas to you all.
